STAIN! A look at the prickly embrace

Posted in Adele Todd by Adele Todd on July 27, 2008

I am working on a whole new body of images that I have titled, Stain! A look at the prickly embrace that is female sexuality.

When the entertainer Akon came to Trinidad more than a year ago, he got into serious trouble for lewd dancing with an underage local girl. The ire seemed less about him and much, much more about her. The daughter of a pastor, she was derided and ridiculed by the media. This incident led me to consider the question, why is it that overt female sexuality still seems to tarnish the image of the woman? Why this particular thing and not something else? There was a clear double standard that I was looking at.

The topic began as a very narrow, specific look and then expanded to include the idea of empowerment through sexuality. At this time, I have done a series of drawings and interviews with women, and shall be writing here about my process, as I work towards a new show.
